The Atlantic Dairy and Forage Institute (ADFI) is a private, not-for-profit research organization located on a 150 acre working dairy farm in New Brunswick. ADFI was created in 1996 after the closure of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada dairy research program in Fredericton, NB.
ADFI’s mandate is to provide high quality research (both scientific and practical) that will benefit dairy producers. Although the organization has an Atlantic focus, it also has an internationally active research program, working regularly with researchers across Canada and the United States.
ADFI maintains a 50-cow milking herd with replacements, the herd is used for research in areas ranging from cow comfort to feeding alternative crops and many others. A number of cannulated cows are also kept on site for use in digestibility studies. ADFI’s research program is also active in the areas of cow nutrition, alternative crops / cropping systems, greenhouse gas mitigation and financial benchmarking.
In addition to the research farm itself, ADFI operates a fee-for-service laboratory providing forage and soil analyses. These capabilities are utilized within ADFI’s research program and also allow ADFI to offer services to Atlantic producers.
